Very useful i had 2 HDD and it was impossible to load Windows(Primary master Linux primary slave Windows). Now it works perfect.
Thank you !
For the last couple of days I have been battling with grub in an update of SUSE 10.3 that dual-boots with XP Pro in my machine, which uses an 80Gb IDE entirely for SUSE, while XP is installed in 2 160GB SATA hd's in a RAID1 array controlled by my machine's BIOS.
With 10.2 I used lilo instead of grub, and just dumped the IDE's MBR into a file that was copied to the C:\ folder of XP; to be read and executed by XP's boot.ini. For reasons I ignore, this arrangement is not possible in 10.3, neither lilo nor grub's MBR can be properly carried over to XP. So I was desperately looking for another solution that would permit me to dual boot from grub or lilo, and, fortunately I found your solution in this page which worked like an absolute charm! With it, I enabled the hd0 to hd1 and back mappings as you indicated (and which is something arcane to a beginner like me.) That is why I am taking the time to thank you for your posting, which came like a Godsend. Best regards,
Thanks Paul,
Simpliests solutions are the best, and yours responding exactly to the same problem. Best regards, kenavo Vincent
Does it works with a single, partitioned HD ???
I've got an HD partiotioned. In the first partition I've got Winx XP installed; in the second one I've installed a Linux distro (Mepis), but when I boot it shows me only lunix partitions and I can't start Windows. Any suggestion ?
Yes, grub needs to be told about every OS that it might boot. The count of physical drives is beside the point. For dual boot, you might have this:
----------------- title Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client (2.6.18-53.1.4.el5) root (hd1,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5.img title Win XP rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 ------------------
Mandriva was working well many times and then it decided it wouldnt go to the desktop. It only goes to a black screen asking me to put in my username and password etc. I dont want to reinstall because I finally got WMV MPEG MP3 etc working and downloaded all updates.
Does anyone know how to just fix the grub so I can start the Mandriva Spring 2008 installed on my hard disk? I logged in when on black screen and tried typing run start lunux mandriva etc and nothing. However I tried kde and I got it. What a fluke. So I havnt lost Mandriva but would love to fix the grub to load the desktop as it should. Look forward to any help. Dave |
